Capela da Comunidade do Monte Pedral

In 1925 a group of devout residents had a vision. They dreamt of a spiritual haven right here on Monte Pedral. They approached the Bishop, Dom António Barbosa Leão, with a heartfelt plea for a chapel. The Bishop, moved by their devotion, purchased land on Rua do Nogueira. This street is now known as Rua do Pe. José Pacheco do Monte. The Capela da Comunidade do Monte Pedral was designed by Cânonego Joaquim Ferreira Gomes. Master builder Domingos da Silva Leão brought the vision to life. Construction lasted three years and cost the Diocese a considerable sum. Finally, on Christmas Eve 1928, the Capela da Comunidade do Monte Pedral stood ready. It was inaugurated in a grand ceremony led by Bishop António Augusto de Castro Meireles. Imagine the joy and anticipation as the community gathered for the first time in their own sacred space. The Capela da Comunidade do Monte Pedral became a hub of activity. It wasn’t just a place of worship, but a center for social and cultural life. Groups formed, movements ignited, and the spirit of community flourished. The Capela da Comunidade do Monte Pedral bore witness to it all. Sadly, in 2020, the chapel was closed. However, a glimmer of hope emerged. In December 2023, a collaboration between the Diocese and the Associação das Escolas de Jesus, Maria, José breathed new life into the Capela da Comunidade do Monte Pedral.
