Lost in time, can you feel the ancient whispers carried on the wind here at Cape Barbary Megalithic Site? This is no ordinary landscape. It is a journey into Formentera’s prehistoric past.

Welcome to Cape Barbary Megalithic Site. It is a place where the echoes of early human settlements resonate through the stones. Imagine communities thriving here over 4500 years ago during the Bronze Age.

Archaeologists once believed Formentera and Ibiza were uninhabited in prehistoric times. The discovery of Cape Barbary Megalithic Site changed everything. It revealed a rich history of early settlements. To date, 21 sites have been identified, with only three excavated. Research indicates that the largest population settlement of Formentera was right here at Cape Barbary.

The Cape Barbary Megalithic Site comprises three locations: Cape Barbary I, II, and III. These sites showcase circular and naviform huts. Naviform means elliptical or semicircular structures. They are similar to those found in Mallorca and Menorca but with slight differences.

Cape Barbary I stands apart. It is the most southern and farthest site with a simple circular floor plan. This suggests well-rooted communities planned their habitats in organized groups.

Let’s focus on Cape Barbary II. It is considered the most important and complete site, featuring nine complex habitational structures. The clear division of spaces indicates communal living. There were separate areas for work, animals, and rest. Restoration work has been ongoing to preserve this important site. Experts have worked to relocate stones to their original positions.

Dr Sureda Pau, an expert involved in excavations, helps us imagine Formentera 3000 years ago. The landscape was not very different from today. People maximized nature’s resources. They developed agriculture and kept animals for food. Studies at Cape Barbary II seek to understand the way of life of these early inhabitants. They also examine the interaction with nearby communities in the Balearic Islands, the peninsula, and North Africa.

Cape Barbary III reveals walls of several constructions with a quadrangular floor plan. These may have been used for agricultural and livestock activities. Despite some damage over time, the high concentration of sites here reveals that this area was the main population center for Formentera’s first settlers.

Exploring the Cape Barbary Megalithic Site means walking through the footsteps of prehistoric communities. Imagine their daily lives and their connection to the land. The structures may be eroded but their stories are etched into the landscape.

As you leave Cape Barbary Megalithic Site, remember you’ve touched a piece of Formentera’s ancient soul. The stones whisper tales of resilience, adaptation, and community.
