Shining brightly against the dramatic backdrop of the Tasman Sea, Cape Baily Lighthouse has guided ships for decades. Cape Baily Lighthouse stands proudly at the southern entrance to Botany Bay. Its construction, completed in 1950, was driven by a critical need. Northbound ships needed a clear signal to navigate close to the coastline. This allowed them to avoid the treacherous southerly currents further out at sea. Cape Baily Lighthouse was never manned, a testament to its automated design. The lighthouse’s lantern room has a unique history. It was repurposed from a late 19th-century lighthouse. The exact origin of the lantern room remains a mystery, adding a touch of intrigue to Cape Baily’s story. Originally powered by conventional means, the lighthouse transitioned to solar power in 1987. This eco-friendly update ensures the lighthouse continues its vital role while minimizing its environmental impact. Standing 9.1 meters tall, Cape Baily Lighthouse emits a powerful beam. Its white light flashes in a distinct group of four, every 16 seconds, visible for 13 nautical miles. Cape Baily Lighthouse is accessible via the scenic Cape Baily Coast Walk. This walk, a little over 5 kilometers from Cape Solander in Botany Bay National Park, offers breathtaking views of the coastline. While the lighthouse grounds are open to visitors, the tower itself remains closed to the public.
