Was it the scent of sea salt or the rumble of passing cars? I can’t say what first drew me to Capaci. But here I stand, ready to tell you the tale of this Sicilian town. Capaci, a name etched in history, is more than just a dot on the map of the Metropolitan City of Palermo. It’s a town of stories, resilience, and beauty, located on Sicily’s vibrant coast. In 2011, Capaci was home to over 11,000 souls, a testament to its enduring appeal. Capaci is a town intertwined with the A29 autostrada, a vital artery connecting Palermo to Punta Raisi Airport. This very road bears witness to a dark day in Italian history. On May 23, 1992, the Capaci bombing shook the nation. Anti-Mafia judge Giovanni Falcone and his companions were tragically assassinated in an explosion that reverberated through the community. A memorial now stands at the site, a somber reminder of the fight against organized crime. But Capaci is more than this tragedy. It’s a town of vibrant life, a place where the golden sands of its beaches meet the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean. Imagine strolling along the coastline, the sun warming your skin. The turquoise and blue hues of the sea stretch as far as the eye can see. From diving and snorkeling to beach sports, there’s something for everyone. Capaci’s historic heart beats within its Mother Church. The church, dedicated to Sant’Erasmo, boasts the grandeur of typical Sicilian Baroque style, showcasing intricate decorations and vibrant frescoes. The Church of San Rocco, the Conti Pilo Palace, and the Grande Fountain add to the architectural tapestry of the town. From its baroque churches to its lively nightlife along the Lungomare, Capaci offers a unique blend of history and vibrancy. A town marked by both triumph and tragedy, it stands as a symbol of Sicilian resilience. Capaci invites you to explore its history, embrace its beauty, and remember its stories.
