“Is this where the dragons descended?” a young voice chirped from the boat, echoing across the serene expanse of Cao Văn Reservoir. The Cao Văn Reservoir isn’t about descending dragons, though. It’s a story of human intervention shaping nature’s canvas, a testament to how a dam can birth a haven for life. In the 1960s, a 30-kilometer dam along the Day River transformed the landscape, giving rise to this sprawling wetland. This wasn’t the intent, but the flooding created an unintentional paradise. This ‘waveless bay’ became a sanctuary, a vital corridor for migratory birds. Cao Văn Reservoir is now the largest submerged nature reserve in Vietnam, a sprawling tapestry of over 3,500 hectares. It’s a vibrant ecosystem teeming with life. Imagine gliding through the tranquil waters on a bamboo boat, the gentle lapping of water against the hull the only sound. Reeds and water lilies brush against your hands as you navigate this watery wonderland. The reserve is a mosaic of habitats, home to 72 bird species, 39 mammal species, and a rich tapestry of plant life. Among these inhabitants is the critically endangered Delacour’s langur, a primate clinging to existence. Cao Văn Reservoir holds the largest population of these rare creatures in Vietnam. The limestone mountains, with names like Cat Scratches (Meo Cao) and Fairy (Co Tien), rise majestically from the water, their reflections shimmering in the mirror-like surface. Beneath the surface, the water is so clear that you can glimpse the algae swaying gently in the current. This clarity, combined with the dramatic scenery, caught the eye of Hollywood filmmakers, who chose Cao Văn Reservoir as a filming location for “Kong: Skull Island.” This serene beauty is far removed from the bustling tourist hubs of Tam Coc and Trang An. Here, tranquility reigns. No vendors or intrusive photographers interrupt the quiet magic. The only sounds are the whispers of nature and the gentle rhythm of paddles dipping into the water.
