High above Zion Canyon’s depths Canyon Overlook reveals itself. A short but rewarding hike leads to this breathtaking viewpoint. The trail is moderately challenging winding its way along sandstone cliffs. It offers glimpses of Pine Creek Canyon far below. A small wooden bridge adds a touch of charm to this rugged landscape.
Canyon Overlook isn’t just a scenic spot. It holds a piece of Zion’s history. Originally known as the Great Arch Trail its name changed in the 1940s. Even though the trail leads to the Great Arch you stand above it unable to see it directly. This overlook offers unparalleled views of Zion Canyon. The Towers of the Virgin rise majestically in the distance. To the west Bridge Mountain and the West Temple stand guard. With binoculars you might even spot desert bighorn sheep. These magnificent creatures have been reintroduced to the park.
Parking is limited at Canyon Overlook. Be prepared to circle the lot multiple times. Pit toilets are available near the trailhead. The trail itself is well-maintained but rocky. Wear sturdy footwear. The sandstone can be slippery especially when wet. Several long drop-offs are fenced for safety. The hike takes about an hour. It’s best enjoyed in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat and crowds. Summer temperatures can soar to 100 degrees. Spring and fall offer more moderate temperatures.
