How did a place named after an indigenous tribe become a “banana republic”? Welcome to the captivating Cantón de Quepos! The name might ring a bell because it comes from the valiant Quepoa tribe. They were renowned for their strength, especially the women who were admired for their archery skills. These indigenous people were not just warriors but skilled farmers, hunters, fishers, and artists. Sadly, their legacy was marred by the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors and the devastating impact of European diseases. The name “Quepos” survived, but the landscape of the Cantón was about to change drastically. By the 1930s, the humble banana took center stage. The United Fruit Company arrived, transforming Quepos into a hub for banana production and export. This era earned the region the nickname “banana republic,” a reflection of the banana’s influence on the economy and social landscape. The American-owned company had a significant presence. Migrants flocked to Quepos for work, and a distinct “American zone” emerged where the company’s management resided. However, floods and a disease affecting banana plantations brought an end to the banana boom. Yet, Quepos proved to be resilient. The decline of the banana led to the rise of another crop: African oil palms. This new industry breathed life back into Quepos, showcasing the adaptability of the region. Today, Cantón de Quepos stands as a testament to the resilience of nature and the enduring legacy of its people.
