High above Cat Ba Island sits Cannon No.2. It waits silently, a relic of conflicts past. Today we’re going to delve into the history of this very spot.

Cannon No.2 is part of the larger Cannon Fort complex. This fort played a pivotal role in Vietnam’s struggle against foreign invaders. The French started building Cannon Fort in the 1940s. The Japanese then occupied Cat Ba Island during World War II. They used the fort to protect their interests. Later, the French and Viet Cong also utilized it. It served as a defensive fortress.

This location was strategic. It provided control over Ha Long Bay and the coast. Cannon No.2 and its sister cannon controlled the sea and offered air protection. The Vietnamese modified the fortress to suit their needs.

Now look at the cannon itself. It was made by the French around 1910. It had a range of about 40 km. Cannon No.1 controlled the port near Hai Phong. Cannon No.2 had three control sections by the sea. The cannons are probably the most interesting monuments here.

Imagine soldiers operating this very cannon. They would have scanned the horizon. They looked for enemy ships or aircraft. The fort also features tunnels and bunkers. These offered protection during attacks. You can explore these underground passages. They give a glimpse into the lives of the soldiers stationed here.

Consider the views from Cannon No.2’s position. From here, you can see Cat Ba Island, Lan Ha Bay and the Gulf of Tonkin. The scenery is stunning with limestone karsts. The emerald waters create a beautiful backdrop. Many visitors come here to witness the breathtaking sunsets.

Beyond the cannons and fortifications, remember the human element. Soldiers met their loved ones here. This was a motivation for them. The fort also has a memorial room, nicknamed the Love Room.

Today, Cannon No.2 stands as a reminder of resilience. It is a testament to Vietnamese spirit. Take a moment to reflect on the history. Think about the sacrifices made here. The fort now promotes patriotism. It reminds us of Vietnam’s past. As you explore this historic site, remember its significance. Cannon No.2 played a role in shaping the region. It is a must-visit destination on Cat Ba Island.
