“NCPC” and “1856” are etched into the steel of Cannon 2. Imagine the stories this silent giant could tell. Cannon 2, along with its sibling, stands as a relic of Mumbai’s British East India Company era.

These cannons once guarded Mumbai’s sea borders. They were vital for protecting its ports and important buildings. Now, Cannon 2 enhances the beauty of a suburban park. It offers a touch of history to Mumbaikars.

The BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation decided to restore Cannon 2. The goal was to bring back its original glory. The cannons were lying in Lions Childrens Park. This park was built in 1971. It is a green space visited by thousands every day. Yet, Cannon 2 was virtually neglected.

These cannons are 3.10 meters long. Their inner circumference measures 0.64 meters. The outer circumference is 1.17 meters. They are made of sturdy steel.

Mumbai is dotted with historical remnants. There are fortress walls and underground tunnels. Old milestones and quaint fountains can be found. Experts believe over 250 old cannons are scattered across the city. Some are visible, others hidden. Many are in poor condition. Cannon 2 is a lucky one to be preserved.

The British installed these cannons in many locations. Their purpose was to protect Mumbai. This included its harbors and the mint. Jitendra Pardeshi, a BMC Gardens Superintendent, noted their good condition. The Municipal Antiquities Preservation engineer is restoring Cannon 2. It will be re-installed on a high platform. This will afford Mumbaikars leisure with a historical touch.

Cannon 2 offers a glimpse into Mumbai’s past. It reminds us of the city’s strategic importance during British rule. The hope is that these restored cannons will raise awareness. People will learn about Mumbai’s rich heritage. Next time you visit a park in Mumbai, remember Cannon 2. Think about its history. Consider its role in protecting this great city.
