Established in 1974 the Canadian Institute in Greece stands before you. Its history is a testament to scholarly dedication. It began as the Canadian Archaeological Institute at Athens. The Institute received official recognition from the Greek Ministry of Culture in 1976. This marked a significant milestone in its journey. This recognition solidified its place among 17 other foreign archaeological institutes based in Athens.

Initially the Institute operated from space provided by the Canadian Embassy. Later in 1982 a grant from the Canadian Council allowed the Institute to secure its own premises. These were located at Gennadiou 2. The grant unfortunately was not perpetual. Funding ended in 1994. This led to the closure of other Canadian research centers in Rome and Cairo. The Canadian Institute in Greece however remained the sole center for Canadian scholars in the Mediterranean.

Undeterred the Institute expanded. A successful fundraising effort enabled the purchase of an apartment building at Dionysiou Aiginitou 7. This provided office space lecture halls and a library. Importantly it provided accommodation for visiting scholars. A second apartment was acquired in 2006. This further expanded the Institute’s facilities. The Institute’s name was changed in 2005 to reflect its broader interests. The new name is Canadian Institute in Greece. This name better represents the Institute’s activities.

The Canadian Institute in Greece has a remarkable legacy. Its research activities span various archaeological sites across Greece. These include Argilos Mytilene Kastro-Kallithea Eleon Tanagra and many more. The Institute’s commitment to fostering Canadian scholarship in Greek studies is impressive. It offers internships and a regular lecture series. The Institute also houses a large library currently containing over 5000 volumes. It provides resources for researchers from around the world. The Canadian Institute in Greece continues to play a vital role in the field of Greek studies. Its contributions are significant and long lasting. It’s a hub for collaborative research and a testament to international academic cooperation. This building embodies the spirit of intellectual exchange and cultural understanding.
