Established in April 1908 Canaan Missionary Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith. It began as a small mission. Reverend Benjamin J Holcomb his brothers Prophet M and Charles H Holcomb and other Christians had a vision. They purchased property on Belfield Avenue and Haines Street. For 64 years the congregation worshipped there. Their numbers grew. Their service deepened.
Reverend Holcomb pastored for 16 years. The church experienced spiritual and financial growth. Several notable pastors followed. Reverend B H Moore led in 1925. Reverend Gus Roman served twice starting in 1967 and again in 1992. His pastorates saw significant membership growth. Outreach programs flourished. The church expanded spiritually physically and economically. The church’s vast growth led to its current location.
Reverend Roman’s leadership was exceptional. He oversaw unprecedented growth. He implemented extensive outreach programs. The church experienced significant physical and economic expansion. In 1980 Reverend Roman became pastor of Brennan Baptist Church in Brooklyn New York.
Reverend Manuel L Dillingham served from August 1982 to January 1993. The church remained productive. Mission evangelism and stewardship were strong. Outreach programs were broadened. A children’s church was established. During his tenure the church acquired a building at 302 School House Lane. It became a community service center. In February 1993 Reverend Dillingham became pastor of Friendship Baptist Church in Kansas City Missouri.
Reverend Dr Gus Roman returned to Canaan in September 1993. He added new services. He expanded existing programs in Christian and lay education. He focused on missions counseling and personal growth. He addressed health care and civic responsibilities. Reverend Roman retired in April 2006. He now serves as Pastor Emeritus.
Reverend Derick Brennan became pastor in August 2006. He is committed to holistic ministry. He concentrates on the spiritual growth of each member. The church continues to proclaim the love of Jesus. It shares the Good News of the risen Christ. Canaan Missionary Baptist Church maintains the commitment of the Little Mission established in 1908. It’s a legacy of faith perseverance and community.
