Far from Ibiza’s famed nightlife, a different kind of story echoes around Can Mico. What if these silent walls could talk? What tales of Ibiza’s past would they whisper?

Can Mico stands as a ruin today. It is a testament to the many layers of Ibiza’s history. This island’s story stretches back millennia. Humans lived here as far back as the 6th and 5th millennium BC. These first settlers found an untouched paradise.

In the 7th century BC, the Phoenicians arrived. They called the island Ibosim. Ibiza became a key point for their Mediterranean colonization. Salt production thrived here. The textile and ceramic industries also flourished.

After the fall of Tyre, Carthage took control. Ibiza became a strategic and religious center. The worship of the goddess Tanit grew. The cemetery of Es Puig des Molins is a reminder of this era.

The Romans conquered the Balearic Islands in 123 BC. They called Ibiza Ebusus. Though Ibiza kept some independence, Roman influence is clear. They built roads and aqueducts.

After the Roman Empire fell, Ibiza faced instability. In the 10th century, it joined the Caliphate of Córdoba. Under Arab rule, known as Yebisah, Ibiza prospered. The Arabs improved farming with irrigation. They also revitalized trade.

In 1235, Catalan troops of James I of Aragon conquered the island. This marked Ibiza’s entry into the Christian world. Santa Eulària des Riu also bears the marks of the Moors. Oil presses and irrigation channels are still visible. The name Xarc, meaning east in Arabic, became Quartó del Rei. This later transformed into Santa Eulària des Riu.

Centuries passed with agriculture and fishing as the mainstays. Then, in the 20th century, tourism transformed Ibiza. Its natural beauty drew artists and travelers. Today, Ibiza is known as a destination for entertainment.

Can Mico is a silent observer. It has witnessed the island’s transitions. From ancient settlers to Phoenician traders. From Roman rule to Arab influence. Can Mico stands as a reminder. It whispers of Ibiza’s long and complex history.
