The Campus Cit scientifique is a sprawling academic campus. It began in 1964. It is located in Villeneuve-d’Ascq. This area is part of the European Metropolis of Lille. The campus spans 150 hectares. It houses around one hundred buildings.

Originally, this land was fertile fields. It belonged to Annappes. Farmers from Annappes and Ascq worked here. In 1964, Guy Debeyre envisioned a scientific campus. It would house the Faculty of Sciences. The faculty was previously in Lille’s historic center.

Edgard Pisani, a minister, decided to build a new city. It would be near the Campus Cit scientifique. This led to the creation of Villeneuve-d’Ascq in 1970. The Campus Cit scientifique was surrounded by fields. Students traveled to Annappes’ temporary buildings. Buses transported them back in the evening.

In 1983, Franois Mitterrand opened the world’s first fully automated metro. It was in the Quatre Cantons area. The VAL system was invented at the university here. VAL originally meant Villeneuve-d’Ascq Lille. It later became Vhicule automatique lger for international use.
