The Campelle a small architectural marvel was conceived in 2003. The university’s move to the Sandberg necessitated a new space for the Evangelical Student Congregation. The idea of a spiritual sanctuary on campus captivated many. An initiative group formed in 2005. They collected donations from individuals companies and foundations. The Nordelbische Church agreed to become the sponsor. The name Campelle a blend of campus and Kapelle won a naming contest in 2006. The Riemann architectural firm’s design won the architectural competition. The Campelle was inaugurated on November 11 2009.
More than just a church the Campelle quickly became a campus hub. It hosts counseling sessions international evenings exhibitions readings dance performances concerts discussions workshops services and prayer gatherings. It fosters community and connection. The Flensburg mayor praised it as a meeting place and cultural center a retreat from everyday life. The president of the university lauded the Campelle’s openness. He noted its support for international students. It embodies civic engagement for justice sustainability and diversity. The president of the Flensburg University of Applied Sciences agreed. The Campelle’s design is striking. A large open space forms the heart of the building. It features a visible wooden frame construction and a light crown of translucent plastic panels. A double row of birch trees encircles the structure. This creates a walkway and plays with light and shadow inside. Its unique design earned the Campelle recognition in the Schleswig-Holstein timber construction prize. This small chapel measuring roughly 160 square meters 80 of which are devoted to prayer is truly a special place. It’s a testament to community effort architectural creativity and spiritual purpose.
