The history of recreation and parks is rich. It stems from the early days of Los Angeles. Colonel Felipe de Neve founded Los Angeles in 1781. He created the Plaza in the center of the city. The Plaza became the first park system. It is known as El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historic Monument.
In 1889, the City Council created the Department of Parks. They turned over suitable land to the department. In 1896, Colonel Griffith J. Griffith donated land for a park. By 1915, there was a need for organized social activities. The Department developed indoor recreation centers. These included gymnasiums and game rooms. Ann Street Recreation Center opened in 1908.
The Department opened the first municipal golf course in 1923. In 1925, a Department of Playground and Recreation was created. Venice Beach and Cabrillo Beach were acquired.
The Greek Theatre opened in 1930. The Cabrillo Marine Museum opened in 1934. The Los Angeles Zoo and Griffith Observatory opened in 1935.
Between 1941 and 1945, parks and schools were places of refuge. In 1947, voters approved a bond for parks. The Department of Parks and the Department of Playground and Recreation merged. The Department of Recreation and Parks was born.
