Amidst the tranquil greenery of Memorial Park in Houston, a silent sentinel stands, the Camp Logan Plaque. It whispers tales of a turbulent past, a time of unrest and racial tension. The Camp Logan Plaque, erected in 1992, serves as a stark reminder of the tragic events that unfolded here during World War I. Camp Logan, once a bustling military training camp, now lies beneath this park, its remnants swallowed by nature. In 1917, this serene landscape was shattered by the eruption of the Houston Riot, also known as the Camp Logan Mutiny. African American soldiers stationed at Camp Logan, facing the harsh realities of Jim Crow laws and police brutality, reached a breaking point. Triggered by the wrongful arrest and assault of their fellow soldiers, over 100 armed soldiers marched into Houston on August 23, 1917. The resulting clashes claimed the lives of four soldiers and fifteen white civilians. The aftermath saw the largest court-martial in U.S. history, with 110 black soldiers indicted. Nineteen were executed, and 63 received life sentences. The Camp Logan Plaque, however, tells only a fraction of the story. A year after the riot, Camp Logan became the epicenter of the devastating 1918 flu pandemic. By September 24, over 600 cases were reported among the soldiers. The decision to send sick soldiers home to protect healthy ones inadvertently spread the virus throughout Houston, leading to widespread illness and death. The Camp Logan Plaque stands as a testament to a complex and often painful past. It invites us to reflect on the injustices faced by the soldiers of the 24th Infantry and the devastating impact of the 1918 flu pandemic. It’s a reminder of the importance of understanding history, not just as a collection of facts, but as a tapestry of human experiences, both tragic and transformative.
