Lost in time Camlork Keeill whispers tales of the past. Here before us lie the fragmented remains of this ancient Manx keeill. Imagine its former glory a structure of carefully placed stones once standing tall. Camlork Keeill was more than just stones. It served as a place of worship and burial for generations. Archaeological surveys reveal its dimensions 19 feet by 11 feet. Its walls faced inside and out with large local stones. Earth and rubble filled the spaces between. The doorway was in the west wall. A paved passage led inside. Even a section of the altar remained. The keeill’s foundations were surprisingly sturdy considering its age. They indicate that the ground may have been boggy. The walls tapered from a broad base to a narrower top. This unique feature was possibly a clever construction technique.

Beyond the walls a bank of earth and stones formed a boundary. Sadly the road now cuts through this sacred space. A Bronze Age burial urn was discovered here. This confirms that the keeill was built upon an earlier site. Local legends speak of a farmer who angered the keeill’s spirit. The legend tells of unfortunate consequences when he began leveling Camlork Keeill. His arm became pained. His wife and daughter died. He eventually went insane.

In 1918 P M C Kermode and his team conducted an archaeological survey. This survey beautifully documented Camlork Keeill. They even found a flint scraper and shore pebbles inside. One of the stones was known as the christening stone. Another bore a Latin cross. This cross was likely cut much later. Lord Raglan a Lieutenant Governor of the Isle of Man participated in the survey. He was a keen supporter of archaeological endeavors. Kermode’s team recognized the need to protect Camlork Keeill. They recommended fencing it off. Sadly this never happened. The keeill has slowly been eroded. Animals grazing in the field and people walking over the stones caused gradual damage. The land’s ownership changed. This absence of dedicated guardianship contributed to its decline.

Today Camlork Keeill stands as a reminder of the past. The surviving stones bear witness to its history. Although much is lost the archaeological records allow us to appreciate what once stood. We must continue to protect other keeills so future generations can explore their history too. Let Camlork Keeill inspire us to treasure our shared heritage. Let us preserve these ancient sites for the years to come.
