Imagine you’re standing at a place of peace and remembrance, a place that pays tribute to the sacrifices made during the First World War. This grand structure, sculpted from local stone, is the Cameron Rocks War Memorial. It’s a place where we honour the men of Hamilton who left their homes to serve their country.

Built in 1931, the Cameron Rocks War Memorial is a testament to their bravery and enduring spirit. The pagoda is in the shape of a Victoria Cross. There’s a clock tower too, and in the centre of the structure, a water fountain. You can see that a great deal of heart and craftsmanship went into creating this tribute to our brave soldiers.

The memorial has a fascinating story attached to it. The Hamilton Town Council envisioned it as a symbol of gratitude for the sacrifices made by those who served. Sadly, due to wartime restrictions, their plan to complete it was delayed. Finally, in 1922, enough money was raised to finish the memorial.

After years of planning and fundraising, the Cameron Rocks War Memorial was unveiled by the Governor of Queensland, Lieutenant-General Sir John Goodwin. The ceremony took place on the 16th of August, 1931. The memorial became a treasured landmark, reminding everyone of the courage and dedication of our nation’s veterans.

But the Cameron Rocks War Memorial is more than just a symbol. It’s a living reminder of what they fought for: peace, freedom, and a better future for all. So, as you stand here, take a moment to reflect on the sacrifices and the strength of the human spirit. Let their stories inspire you to cherish the peace we enjoy today.
