Deep in the heart of Camden, Tennessee, stands the Camden Church of Christ. It’s a testament to faith and community, a place where echoes of the past intertwine with the vibrant present. The Camden Church of Christ’s journey began humbly in the late 1800s. Charter members like George M. Leslie, Mrs. Kate M. Leslie, and Mrs. Tina Dodd laid the foundation for this spiritual haven. Initially, the congregation gathered in a modest frame building just off the court square. They even held services in homes and the courthouse during winter. Imagine those early days, a small group of around fifty souls finding solace and strength in their shared beliefs. The church’s history is rich with personal accounts. Lydia Laux Branch recalled attending Sunday school in the old wooden church on Paris Street (now Forrest Street) in 1940. She remembered the hanging light bulbs, the pot-bellied stove, and the open windows in the summer. These details paint a vivid picture of a simpler time. The Camden Church of Christ has seen a parade of inspiring preachers. From J.D. Tant and N.B. Hardeman to Athens Clay Pullias and Willard Collins, their words have resonated through the years. B.C. Larkins served the church from 1945 to 1956, a period of growth and transformation. The church’s leadership has also been instrumental in its journey. Edd Dodd guided the church’s affairs until 1950. Then, E.L. Dodd, M.G. Henry, and Bert P. Cagle were chosen as Elders. Recognizing Camden’s burgeoning economy in 1950, the Elders embarked on a building program. They traded their original lot for a space at 160 South Forrest Avenue. A modern building, complete with an auditorium and basement classrooms, became the new home for the Camden Church of Christ. The church continued to flourish. In the early 1970s, they expanded again. A larger auditorium, offices, and more classrooms were added to accommodate the growing congregation. This expansion marked another chapter in the church’s ongoing story. Mary Willie “Bill” Duncan, a long-time member, reflected on the remarkable growth from fifty members to the thriving community it is today. The Camden Church of Christ’s story reminds us that faith can move mountains. From humble beginnings to its current location at 1285 Highway 70 Bypass, the church stands as a beacon of hope and a testament to the enduring power of community.
