Cambridge University Real Tennis Club

Tucked away on Grange Road, the Cambridge University Real Tennis Club whispers tales of a bygone era. The Cambridge University Real Tennis Club isn’t just a sports venue. It’s a living museum, a monument to a sport that predates lawn tennis. The club, nestled within the university’s grounds, boasts not one, but two historic courts. The first court arose in 1866, built near Burrell’s Walk with funds from fellows of Clare and Trinity Colleges. Initially, access was exclusive to senior and junior members of these colleges. By 1877, King’s College joined the privileged circle. The second court, added in 1890, faced a different fate. It was converted into squash courts in 1933, a temporary exile that lasted 66 years. In 1999, the court was lovingly restored to its original purpose, breathing life back into a piece of sporting history. The Cambridge University Real Tennis Club courts have witnessed more than just matches. They’ve seen shifts in access and even a colorful makeover. In 1902, the courts opened to all Cambridge University members. In 1933, the older court’s walls and floor received a vibrant coat of white paint, and orange balls replaced the traditional white ones in an attempt to improve visibility. This experiment was reversed in 1960, returning the court to its original colors. The club’s history is also etched in the legacies of its professionals. Six individuals have shaped the club’s character over a century. From John Phillips (1866-1882) to Jim Harradine (1882-1909) and Arthur Twinn (1909-1921), their influence reverberates through the generations. More recently, Brian Church mentored numerous professionals, including Chris Bray and Barry Toates, who achieved world-class rankings. Following Church’s retirement, Kees Ludekens injected new energy into the club, boosting bookings with the support of Peter Paterson and the club committee.
