Established in 1970 by Trinity College Cambridge Science Park is the oldest science park in the United Kingdom. Imagine a time before sprawling high-tech buildings. Before this place was a hub of innovation. The land was farmland then part of Trinity College’s estate since Henry VIII’s reign. During World War II the US Army used it to prepare for D-Day. After the war it lay derelict.

Then came a visionary idea. Tony Cornell suggested transforming the land. Sir John Bradfield and Sir Francis Pemberton of Bidwells helped make it happen. Their ambition was to create a centre for scientific enterprise. Cambridge Science Park was born. It was a risky venture. Britain faced economic hardship in the 1970s. Attracting tenants proved difficult. Laser-Scan now 1Spatial was the first to move in 1973.

The park’s growth accelerated in the 1980s. Acorn Computers’ success particularly with the BBC Microcomputer boosted its reputation. This attracted major players like Toshiba. The Cambridge Science Park became a key player in the ‘Cambridge Phenomenon’. Cambridge transformed from a university town into a leading European technology hub. This success led to more science parks in the region.

Today Cambridge Science Park covers 152 acres. Over 170 businesses call it home. These range from university spin-outs to multinational corporations. They work on life-changing technologies. These include personalised medicines artificial intelligence and more. The park has a rich history. It has also played a significant role in shaping Cambridge’s technological landscape. The park’s continued growth shows its ongoing importance to innovation in the United Kingdom. The Cambridge Fun Run a charity race held annually reflects the community spirit within the park. It is a testament to its lasting legacy.
