How does Cambridge Montessori School foster a love of learning? It began with a vision. It is a vision for children and their future. That vision belongs to Dr. Maria Montessori. It also belongs to the school’s founding parents. It is the community’s story.
Cambridge Montessori School was founded in 1963. A group of dedicated parents started it. These parents included the Paukulis, Minsky, and Lockhart families. The school first met in different churches around Cambridge. By 1969, the school broadened its reach. Parents, teachers, and staff committed to this expansion. Since 1974, the Toddler/Primary Program has been at 161 Garden Street. This location is next to Danehy Park.
In 1997, Cambridge Montessori School purchased 129 Sherman Street. With this purchase, they added the Lower and Upper Elementary Programs. In 2008, a third building joined the campus. It sits between the Toddler/Primary building and the Elementary building. This building houses the Middle School. It also holds the Art Studio, Music Room, and Science Lab. Administrative offices and a conference room are also located here.
Today, Cambridge Montessori School enrolls about 150 students. These students range from toddlers through eighth grade. The school serves families from Cambridge and nearby towns. It is an international community. It reflects the culture and resources of the area. Students come from over 20 countries.

Cambridge Montessori School offers several programs. There is a Toddler Program. It serves children from 21 months through age 3. Activities change to meet children’s needs. The Primary Program is for children ages 3 to 6. Children spend three years in the same classroom. The Elementary Program is for students ages 6 to 12. It has two cycles. Lower Elementary is for 6 to 9-year-olds. Upper Elementary is for 9 to 12-year-olds. The Middle School Program is for students ages 12 to 14. It includes a two-year curriculum. This curriculum takes place inside and outside the classroom.
Cambridge Montessori School also has a Passport Program. This includes Early Care. After School Care is also part of it. Clubs, Athletics, and Camps are included. These camps are during the summer and school vacations.
Cambridge Montessori School is a nonprofit. A Board of Trustees governs it. The board includes parents and alumni parents. Community members and the Head of School are also on the board. Cambridge Montessori School is accredited. The American Montessori Society (AMS) accredits it. The Association of Independent Schools in New England (AISNE) also accredits it. The school belongs to the National Association of Independent Schools. It is also a member of Montessori Schools of Massachusetts.
