Founded in 1971 Cambridge College began as a small graduate program. It was an innovative program designed to serve working adults from diverse backgrounds. These adults often lacked access to traditional higher education. The Institute of Open Education IOE was its original name. It later became part of the Antioch University Network. In 1981 Cambridge College became an independent institution. It offered a unique approach to education. Its focus was on individual attention to students. By 1986 it opened its main campus in greater Boston. In 2000 it expanded establishing regional centers. These centers served students in California Puerto Rico and other locations. Cambridge College faced challenges. In 1996 The New England Association of Schools and Colleges raised concerns. These concerns revolved around the quality control of academic achievement. The lack of rigorous entrance requirements and grade inflation were highlighted. However the college persevered. It adapted to the changing educational landscape. In 2017 it consolidated its Cambridge locations into a single campus in Charlestown. This is a neighborhood in Boston. The college also embraced technology. In 2020 it acquired the New England College of Business and Finance. It later rebranded this as Cambridge College Global. This expansion broadened its reach to a wider student population. Throughout its history Cambridge College served thousands of students. It supported their academic and professional goals. Its commitment to open enrollment remains a cornerstone of its identity. In June 2021 the college celebrated its 50th anniversary. A significant milestone marking its dedication to adult learners. However in July 2024 Cambridge College merged with Bay Path University.
