Consider this: row upon row of white headstones stretch out before you. This is the Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial. It is a poignant reminder of sacrifices made during World War II.
This cemetery serves as the final resting place for 3812 American servicemen. They died in Europe. It also commemorates 5127 missing servicemen. Their names are inscribed on the Wall of the Missing.
In 1943, the University of Cambridge gave land for a temporary cemetery. After the war, it became a permanent memorial. The Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial was dedicated in 1956. It stands as one of 26 overseas military cemeteries. These are administered by the American Battle Monuments Commission.
Many who rest here were airmen. They died over Europe. Others were sailors. They were lost in the North Atlantic convoys. Walking through the cemetery, you’ll notice the Wall of the Missing. Four statues of servicemen stand along it. American artist Wheeler Williams sculpted them.
Notably, 18 members of the British Commonwealth armed services are also buried here. They were American citizens. They served mainly in the Royal Air Force and Air Transport Auxiliary.

Inside, a museum room and chapel await. A large map displays air sorties from East Anglia. It also shows convoys across the North Atlantic. Stained glass windows display the seals of the States.
Several notable individuals are memorialized here. Glenn Miller’s music boosted wartime morale. Joseph P. Kennedy Jr., also has his name inscribed here. Lt. Col. Leon Vance Jr. is remembered for his bravery.
In May 2014, a visitor center opened. It contains exhibits about individuals buried or commemorated here. It also details wider WWII campaigns.
The Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial design was a collaboration. Perry, Shaw, Hepburn and Dean were the architects. The Olmsted Brothers handled the landscaping. The cemetery is laid out with fan-shaped burial plots. They radiate like spokes of a wheel. Reflecting pools lead to the memorial building. These pools are like those on the National Mall in Washington DC.
