“Eyebrow Temple?” a woman whispered, her eyebrows shooting up in amusement as she examined the ornate entrance. You might be surprised to learn that the Cambodian Buddhist Center, also known as Wat Ounalom, gets its nickname from a rather unusual relic. It’s said to enshrine an eyebrow hair of the Buddha himself! King Ponhea Yat built this sacred place in 1443, and it quickly became a prominent center for Buddhist learning and practice in Cambodia. Imagine, over 500 monks once lived and studied within these walls! The temple also housed the Buddhist Institute’s library, a treasure trove of over 30,000 titles. Sadly, the Khmer Rouge regime inflicted terrible damage, destroying many artifacts and books. Even many monks tragically lost their lives. But the spirit of Wat Ounalom persevered. Today, the Cambodian Buddhist Center stands as a symbol of resilience, its history whispering from the intricate carvings and peaceful courtyards. The temple we see now is a modern reconstruction, built in 1952 after the original 15th-century structure was destroyed. Take your time to explore its three levels, where captivating paintings and relics bring the life and teachings of Buddha to life. Before you leave, seek out the image of Samdech Huot Tat. This revered figure, the 4th Buddhist patriarch, was tragically executed during the Khmer Rouge regime. His image, displayed in the main temple’s northeast corner, serves as a poignant reminder of the resilience of faith even in the darkest of times.
