Have you ever heard of a church steeple rescued from a brewery? Right here in Arlington stands Calvary United Methodist Church. This church, completed in 1923, is a beautiful testament to community resilience and architectural ingenuity. Calvary United Methodist Church bears a striking resemblance to Boston’s King’s Chapel. Its architects, James Macnaughton and William Perry, drew inspiration from the iconic landmark. The story of its construction is a tale of perseverance. The congregation faced financial struggles during the project. The builder even threatened to sell the unfinished structure for use as a theater. A town-wide fundraising effort saved the day, allowing the church to be completed. The most unique feature of Calvary United Methodist Church is its steeple. It wasn’t originally designed for the church. It’s a rescued relic, a Charles Bulfinch design. Bulfinch intended the belfry for Boston’s King’s Chapel, but it was never installed. It eventually found a home atop the Boylston Market, built in 1810. When the market was demolished in 1887, the cupola was saved by a Charlestown brewery. Years later, when Prohibition forced the brewery to close, the owner generously donated the cupola to Calvary United Methodist Church. This unique architectural element gives the church a distinctive character and a fascinating story. The church continues to serve its community today, a testament to the dedication and generosity of those who built it.
