In 1921, a Victrola played gospel music on the streets of Philadelphia. This simple act sparked the beginnings of Calvary Gospel Church. This wasn’t a grand cathedral rising overnight. Calvary Gospel Church started as a small gathering of believers. They sought fellowship and a place to worship together. Over the decades, Calvary Gospel Church grew. New believers joined, leading the church to relocate multiple times to accommodate its expanding congregation. In 1940, Calvary Gospel Church became officially recognized as the Pentecostal Gospel Mission of Assemblies of God. This marked a key moment in the church’s history. Another significant change happened in 1954. The church merged with a smaller congregation. The name changed to Calvary Assembly of God of Philadelphia. The congregation continued to flourish. By 1968, they launched an ambitious building program. This led to the construction of the building you see before you today in Wyncote. The church’s journey wasn’t without its challenges. The Covid-19 pandemic brought unforeseen difficulties. But Calvary Gospel Church persevered. Their faith remained strong. Now, the church is experiencing renewed growth. They are planning new services and looking towards an exciting future. Calvary Gospel Church’s vision is to nurture followers of Jesus. They aim to build small groups and ultimately create new churches. They believe in reproduction. This is evident in their plans for additional Sunday services. Their long-term goal is to expand even further by adding a second campus.
