A chilling November wind whipped around the corner of Grand River and Vicksburg in 1918. Calvary Presbyterian Church stood newly completed, a beacon of hope amidst the burgeoning industry of Detroit. Calvary Church, as it was often called, had travelled a long road to reach this spot. Its journey began humbly in 1868 as a Sunday school tucked away above a grocery store on Harrison Avenue. From there, the small congregation moved to a cottage on Michigan Avenue and then to a purchased lot near what is now the intersection of I-75 and I-96. Finally, in 1887, the first permanent structure was built on Michigan Avenue. However, this location proved less than ideal. The rise of meatpacking plants in the early 1900s brought unpleasant odors and an influx of new residents whose customs differed from the existing Calvary Church members. Seeing an opportunity, the church sold their land for a handsome profit and began planning for a new home. In 1914, a temporary wooden structure was moved to the corner of Grand River and Vicksburg. Construction of the present Calvary Church began in 1916. The cornerstone was laid in 1917, and the church was dedicated in November 1918. The new building cost $70,000 and took two years to complete. Sadly, much of the church’s early history was lost to a fire that destroyed stored records and possessions during the move. The church flourished in its new location. Membership grew from 665 in 1912 to a peak of 1,700 in 1939. A new addition, completed in 1939, provided classroom space for over 1,000 Sunday school students. Yet, change was on the horizon again. As the neighborhood transformed in the 1950s and 60s, parishioners migrated to the suburbs, and Calvary Church’s attendance dwindled. By the late 1980s, maintaining the large building became a financial strain. In 1991, Calvary Church moved to a smaller building at 7 Mile and Greenview, formerly the Monteith Memorial Church. The Grand River building was sold and has since housed various congregations, including Abundant Life Christian Center and Greater Faith for Deliverance Church. A fire in 2009, caused by a rooftop generator, significantly damaged the sanctuary. Subsequently, scrappers looted the building, stripping it of pipes, radiators, and even the stained-glass windows. Calvary Church’s journey is a testament to the resilience and adaptability of faith communities facing changing times.
