What if I told you this seemingly ordinary ground beneath our feet holds a captivating tale? Calvary Church, right here on this spot, has witnessed a fascinating evolution. Calvary Cemetery in East Los Angeles isn’t the first of its name. An older Calvary Cemetery existed, established when Los Angeles was surveyed in 1849. It held prominent figures like General Andrés Pico, hero of the Battle of San Pascual, and Don Abel Stearns. The ravine beside it was even called “Cemetery Ravine”, now known as Chavez Ravine, home to Dodger Stadium. As Los Angeles grew, so did the old Calvary Cemetery, complete with a chapel. This chapel, built in memory of Andrew Briswalter, found new life in 1904. It was reborn as St. Peter’s Church, serving a growing Italian community in what was then called “Little Italy”. You can still find it at 1039 N. Broadway. Our Calvary Cemetery, dedicated in 1896, carries the torch. It spans 137 acres and features All Souls Chapel, a replica of St. Giles in Stoke Poges, England. This chapel was a popular place of worship after its 1902 dedication. Over the years, the Main Mausoleum, Our Lady’s Garden Mausoleum, and Gethsemane Mausoleum joined All Souls Chapel. Daily Mass is offered in the Main Mausoleum’s chapel. Calvary Cemetery became the final resting place for numerous notable individuals. Among them, actors like Ethel and Lionel Barrymore, Dolores Costello, and Ramón Novarro. You’ll also find the graves of director Richard Boleslawski, oil tycoon Edward L. Doheny, and even mob boss Jack Dragna. This place is more than a cemetery. It is a repository of Los Angeles history, brimming with stories of the famous and the everyday people who shaped this city.
