Calvary Christian Centre – Apenkwa is more than just a building. It is a community of believers. They strive to live by biblical standards. They find an abundant and fulfilling life through God’s Word.
Calvary Charismatic Centre has a fascinating story. The church began as a fellowship. These believers united under Jesus Christ. Their desire was to create devoted Christians. They wanted people committed to teaching God’s word, prayer, and fellowship. This is found in Acts 2:42. They also aimed to equip people to fulfill the Great Commission of Matthew 28:19–20. Looking toward Jesus is their standard of faith.
In 1984, God gave Pastor Ransford Obeng a vision. He was to start a non-denominational English church in Kumasi. Kumasi is the capital of the Ashanti Region in Ghana. This church would spread the good news throughout the country and to the world. Calvary Christian Centre officially began on April 7, 1985. The first service was held at the Ministries’ Canteen in Adum. Over a hundred people attended. It was the very first of its kind in Kumasi.
This church was driven by a unique worship experience. It featured contemporary Bible-based music. It also valued punctuality, excellence, simplicity, and modesty in leadership. Christ-centered teachings and programs were also key.
Pastor Ransford Obeng was directed to reach English-speaking residents. He was also to connect with visitors and students in Kumasi and its surrounding areas. This outreach cut across cultural, ethnic, socio-economic, and language barriers.
The church later moved to the upper floor of the Guinness Wholesales building at Adum. It was aptly named The Upper Room. After three years, it relocated to its own permanent facility in Buokrom in 1990. In May 2005, construction began on the current facility at Ayigya. The church has over 8000 members. The maiden service was held here on April 12, 2009. This new church complex was built by the grace of God.
Pastor Ransford and the leadership have partnered with others. Together, they have planted over 500 churches throughout Ghana and beyond. In the third decade, Calvary Christian Centre aggressively pursued missionary church planting. Local churches were established all over. The church has also sent missionaries to the U.K., USA, Jamaica, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, and Senegal.
Today, Calvary Christian Centre strives to be a model New Testament church. It is chosen to be a blessing to all nations in Christ Jesus. They demonstrate this by speaking only blessings and truth. They live to please Christ, love in purity, and practice true faith. They reach the unsaved, give to missions, and make Christ the center of everything.
The church’s structure is based on the New Testament. All doctrines and practices are derived from it. Local churches are organized with the freedom to operate within biblical limits. Teamwork is a core value. Local churches are governed by a Local Council of Elders or a Working Committee. They meet regularly, at least once a month. Local churches follow approved financial systems. The church audits them every year. Regional Councils hold all local branches accountable. They ensure conformity to the church’s constitution.
