The Association, founded in 1851, originally known as the “Catholic Cemetery Association in Dorchester,” later became the “Boston Catholic Cemetery Association.” While its roots are Catholic, New Calvary Cemetery now welcomes those of all faiths. A devastating fire swept through the cemetery’s records office in June 1878. The inferno tragically consumed irreplaceable records, leaving a gap in the stories of those interred before the blaze. Memorial Day Masses are held annually at New Calvary, offering a moment of reflection and remembrance for all. The cemetery gates are locked, a testament to the tranquility within, but visits can be arranged with 48 hours’ notice. New Calvary Cemetery continues to serve as a place of peace and remembrance, a testament to the enduring power of memory.
