Calvary Assembly of God boasts a rich history rooted in the Pentecostal movement. Its origins trace back even further to 1906. Services began in a tent then moved to members’ homes. It eventually became an independent assembly. On July 18 1930 the church officially joined the Assemblies of God. Its name changed from Pentecostal Assembly to Calvary Tabernacle. Later it became Calvary Assembly of God Inc.
Calvary Assembly experienced remarkable growth. In the 1970s it became one of America’s first megachurches. It launched numerous ministries including the well-known Charisma magazine. By the 1980s it had a 5500-seat auditorium. Today though its congregation is smaller. It still maintains its commitment to faith and community. The church continues to serve the El Sereno community. It offers Sunday services and mid-week gatherings.
