Whispers of rebellion hang heavy in the air. This is Calton Glasgow. Right here before you stands a place steeped in history woven into the very fabric of the city’s East End. Calton a name echoing with the rhythmic clack of weaver’s shuttles and the cries of protestors.
Calton’s story is one of industry and struggle. It thrived as a weaving centre its looms humming a constant tune. Yet this same industry brought hardship. Wages plummeted cheaper foreign textiles flooding the market. The Calton weavers desperate and angry took to the streets. Their cries for fair pay a prelude to tragedy.
On June 30 1787 a meeting was held on Glasgow Green. The weavers united demanding better lives. Their protest escalated. On September 3 1787 violence erupted. Soldiers were called in their guns silencing the voices of dissent. Six men fell their lives lost in the fight for fair wages. These men were dubbed the Calton martyrs. A memorial though long delayed stands now as a reminder of their sacrifice.
Calton also faced other challenges. Janey Godley’s autobiography Handstands in the Dark paints a vivid picture of the Calton in the 1980s and 1990s. Heroin abuse was rampant. Urban renewal was trying to heal the deep wounds of poverty. Yet despite the difficulties Calton endured a deep-seated spirit of community survived.
The area’s poverty was stark. A child born in Calton faced a life expectancy significantly lower than children in wealthier areas. Heart disease hospitalisation and unemployment were far more likely for Calton’s children. This disparity a harsh reality reflecting deep societal inequalities. Sectarian tensions also existed adding a further layer of complexity to Calton’s social fabric. The Calton Tongs a local gang exemplified these divisions. Their presence a grim reminder of the challenges faced by the community.
Through it all Calton endured. Its spirit unbowed. From the Barras Market to the Barrowland Ballroom Calton’s vibrancy shines through. It’s a place of resilience a place where history lives on in every cobbled street. The Calton a story of struggle of survival and ultimately of enduring community.
