Callahan Playground stands as a testament to the power of community vision and ecological restoration. In 2019, Detroit Audubon, in partnership with the city, launched the Detroit Bird City project. Callahan Park became the first of several parks to undergo this remarkable metamorphosis. The project aimed to create vital grassland habitats for declining bird populations. The transformation also addressed the city’s need for low-maintenance green spaces. Once established, these native meadows require minimal care. The colorful coneflowers, milkweed, and wild bergamot now sway in the breeze, inviting visitors to wander the winding paths. The community embraced the project from the start.
