Founded in 1960 California State University Dominguez Hills stands proudly on land with a rich history. This 346-acre campus was once part of Rancho San Pedro the first private land grant in Southern California. Juan Jose Dominguez a Spanish soldier received the massive 75000-acre grant in 1784. Parts of that original grant remain in the possession of his descendants today.

The university’s location wasn’t accidental. The California State Legislature authorized the creation of South Bay State College in 1960. A growing population fueled by World War II veterans and booming aerospace and defense industries demanded a college in the South Bay.

Initially plans were to locate the college in Palos Verdes. However following the devastating Watts Rebellion of 1965 Governor Pat Brown saw a crucial opportunity. He recognized the need to bring higher education to the underserved communities of South Los Angeles. The Dominguez Hills site offered easy access for this diverse largely minority population.

The college initially held classes in a temporary location. In 1965 it began in a California Federal Savings Bank in Rolling Hills Estates. It was renamed California State College at Palos Verdes. Only about 40 students enrolled. They were taught by 11 faculty members and administrators. Later the college moved to a temporary location called the Watt Campus. Finally the permanent campus opened in October 1968.

Renowned modernist architect A Quincy Jones designed the campus. His master plan shaped the university’s physical form until his death in 1979. His vision created a visually striking and functional campus. It continues to serve the students of California State University Dominguez Hills.

Today California State University Dominguez Hills provides undergraduate and graduate education. Its focus is on culturally sustaining practices research and community engagement. It remains true to its founding mission: providing educational opportunities to underserved communities. The university continues to strive for academic excellence social justice sustainability and collaboration. It stands as a testament to the power of education to transform lives and communities. It’s a campus where voices are heard and futures are built.
