Founded in 1792 as the Calcutta Cricket Club Clippers, it stands as one of the oldest sporting institutions globally. Imagine this ground in its early days. British expatriates, eager to continue their beloved sports, established this club during the East India Company rule. Cricket was their initial passion.

The Calcutta Cricket and Football Club quickly became a gentlemen’s club. It was exclusively for Europeans. Recent discoveries suggest that the club might even predate 1787. That would make it the oldest cricket club worldwide.

Initially, matches were played near the Hooghly River. By 1841, the club secured land for a permanent venue. In 1864, permission was granted to construct a pavilion at the eastern end of Eden Gardens. A handsome teak structure soon stood there. It was modelled after the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground.

The Calcutta Cricket and Football Club expanded its sporting repertoire over the years. It absorbed the Ballygunge Cricket Club and Calcutta Football Club. The merger in 1965 created the multi-sport entity we see today.

Beyond cricket and football, the Calcutta Cricket and Football Club embraced rugby, field hockey, and cycle polo. The club’s rugby section holds the distinction of being the oldest outside the United Kingdom and Ireland. This cemented its place in sporting history.
