Whose bright idea was it to blow up a levee? This, my friends, is Caernarvon. It’s a place forever linked to a dramatic and controversial event: the dynamiting of the levee during the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927. Imagine the scene: the mighty Mississippi River, swollen with floodwaters, threatening to engulf New Orleans. Desperate times called for desperate measures. It was here at Caernarvon that the decision was made to sacrifice this community in a last-ditch effort to protect the city. Tons of dynamite were used to breach the levee, hoping to divert the floodwaters and relieve the pressure on New Orleans. The explosion, a deafening roar that echoed across the delta, unleashed a torrent of water that reshaped the landscape. The sacrifice at Caernarvon, however, proved somewhat in vain as the levees ultimately failed in other areas upstream. While the dynamiting might not have single-handedly saved New Orleans, it stands as a stark reminder of the raw power of nature and the lengths people will go to in a fight against it.
