Pink. That’s the first thing you notice about Cadillac Jack’s. A shockingly vibrant pink. This isn’t just any diner. This is Cadillac Jack’s in Sun Valley a Los Angeles landmark.

Right here on San Fernando Road Cadillac Jack’s began life as the Pink Cafe. It was built in 1949 an addition to the Pink Motel. Joseph Thomulka a man who clearly loved pink built it all. He moved his family from Pennsylvania to California and created this little piece of roadside Americana.

San Fernando Road was once a major thoroughfare connecting Los Angeles to points north. Many motels and restaurants thrived here during the postwar boom. But when Interstate 5 was built the road lost its importance. Most businesses disappeared. Not Cadillac Jack’s.

Cadillac Jack’s survived. It even flourished. It became a favorite hangout for locals a place where country and western music filled the air and waitresses traded barbs with regulars. Then Hollywood discovered it. Film crews started using it as a 1950s setting.

Today Cadillac Jack’s is a meticulously preserved 1950s diner. The current owner Monty Thomulka Joseph’s son maintains its pristine condition. He even allows skateboarders to use the old fish-shaped swimming pool. It has been a legendary skate spot since the 1970s.

The diner itself is a time capsule. You can see old movie posters and photos of custom cars on the walls. Hubcaps adorn the ceiling. The menu features classic diner fare burgers sandwiches and pancakes. The California Kid burger and the Motown Special are popular choices. The chili is a bit unusual. It’s more like a spicy tomato sauce. But the malts are the real deal made with an old-fashioned Hamilton Beach mixer.

Cadillac Jack’s is more than a diner. It’s a symbol of a bygone era. It’s a survivor. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of a roadside icon. It’s pink. And it’s unforgettable.
