What if a place vanishes not from the earth, but from the map? That’s the story of Caçarilhe. This Portuguese village in Celorico de Basto once stood proud. It was a distinct freguesia or parish. Now, it exists as part of something new.

Caçarilhe isn’t gone. Its history remains woven into the land. Imagine life here in 2011. Around 466 people called Caçarilhe home. They lived within its 5.95 square kilometers. That’s about 78 inhabitants per square kilometer. A close-knit community thrived.

Then came 2013. A national administrative reform swept through Portugal. Caçarilhe ceased to exist as an independent freguesia. It joined with Infesta. Together, they formed the União das Freguesias de Caçarilhe e Infesta. Caçarilhe became the seat of this new union.

Think of the families who have lived here for generations. They have places with names like Aldeia and Alvarela. Other places were named Atrás do Telhado and Assento. Barreiros and Basto are also memorable. Each name has a story.

Consider the Serra do Viso. This mountain offers stunning views. It overlooks the Tamega River valley. In the foreground stands Monte da Nossa Senhora da Graça. The Serra do Alvão and Serra do Marão rise in the distance.

Caçarilhe has its Igreja Paroquial. This is the parish church. There is also the Capela da Senhora do Viso. This is the Chapel of Our Lady of Viso. These landmarks define the landscape. They offer places for reflection and community.

The population of Caçarilhe has changed over time. In 1864, there were 500 people. Numbers fluctuated over the years. By 2011, the population was 466. Each number represents lives lived and stories shared.

Caçarilhe’s identity evolved. It adapted to administrative changes. Its people remain connected to the land and its history.
