Caçador de Lleons Sculpture

Agapit Vallmitjana i Abarca created this dramatic scene in 1883. Barcelona’s City Council commissioned the Caçador de Lleons sculpture, specifically for the 1888 Universal Exposition. The sculpture joined other mythological and allegorical works in the park. Caçador de Lleons depicts a hunter, dressed in oriental garb. He clutches two lion cubs, his face etched with fear. Although the lioness isn’t present in the sculpture, the hunter’s expression tells the story. He anticipates her attack, a chilling reminder of the wild world beyond Barcelona.
