Right here at 400 Huntington Ave, we find the Cabot Physical Education Center. This building is home to Northeastern University Huskies athletic teams. But there is more to the Cabot Center than meets the eye.
Built in 1954, the Cabot Center got its name in 1957. It was named for Godfrey Lowell Cabot. He was a patron of the university. The Cabot Physical Education Center houses many facilities for various teams.
Interestingly, this arena stands on the site of the old Huntington Avenue Grounds. The first-ever World Series baseball game occurred here in 1903. Also, it is just over a quarter-mile from Matthews Arena. The Boston Bruins called Matthews Arena home in 1924.
Let’s step inside the Cabot Center. Solomon Court awaits us. This 1800-seat court hosts the women’s basketball and volleyball teams. It is also the non-game day home of the men’s basketball team. In the late 1990s, the facilities had a multimillion-dollar renovation. On November 28, 2000, they dedicated the court to Bernard “Bunny” Solomon. He was a longtime fan.
In 1981, the venue hosted the championship game of the ECAC North. It is now known as the America East Conference men’s basketball tournament.
Now, let’s explore the Solomon Indoor Track. When the Cabot Center opened in 1954, it featured a dirt floor track. In 1971, a 120-yard banked track was installed. Later, a flat rubber surface track replaced it. In 2008, another renovation took place. An embedded granule track was installed. It features four-lane straightaways and two-lane ovals. There is also a pole vault pit. A turf infield allows training for many of the university’s sports teams. Like the court, this track is named for Bernard “Bunny” Solomon and his wife, Jolane.
Next, we have the Barletta Natatorium. This natatorium features a 6-lane 25-yard indoor swimming pool. The Northeastern Swimming & Diving team calls it home. Dedicated on January 14, 1969, the pool honors the Barletta family. It seats over 500 fans.
But wait, there’s more to the Cabot Physical Education Center. It also offers racquetball courts and workout facilities. These modern athletic amenities enhance the Cabot Center.
