“Diha ra gyud sa may ka bancal-an.” That’s how the locals used to describe Cabancalan. This phrase translates to “just by the bangcal trees”. Weary rice planters rested by these trees. They sought shelter from the midday sun. Bangcal trees gave Cabancalan its name.

Let’s delve into the story of Cabancalan. This barangay is a part of Mandaue City. It holds a unique place in local history.

Imagine Cabancalan long ago. Ricefields stretched out. Bangcal trees dotted the landscape. A large mossy cave called “Bito” existed. Locals whispered tales of a mythological beast living inside. Artist Julian Jumalon depicted this beast as a gigantic squid.

The cave “Bito” was about 20 feet deep. A flowing spring ran through it. Oldtimers believed it harbored a mythological beast. But the popular Bito has become an obscure memory.

Cabancalan’s history dates back centuries. Historical records suggest it was founded as a barrio in 1602.

Over the years, Cabancalan has grown. In 1990, the population was 7,393. By 2020, it had grown to 14,841. That’s an increase of 7,448 people.

Today, Cabancalan is a bustling barangay. It is a short distance from Mandaue’s city center. Despite its growth, the name reminds us of its past.

However, Cabancalan faces challenges. Drainage issues have plagued the area. Some residents have even nicknamed a problem site “Boracay”. The Mandaue City government is working to address these problems. Land acquisition has caused delays.

Barangay captain Cynthia Remedio has voiced her people’s concerns. Students and residents from Sitio Pilit are especially affected. Attempts to fix the drainage have been made. A proper drainage system reaching the Butuanon River is needed.

Former congresswoman Nerissa Soon-Ruiz allocated funds for a drainage system. The Department of Public Works and Highways installed a water catchment. But it only temporarily solved the problem.

Cabancalan continues to evolve. Its story reflects the blend of history and progress. The name “Cabancalan” echoes with tales of bangcal trees and a mystical cave. It stands as a testament to the community’s enduring spirit.
