Gaze upon this imposing figure. This is the Buz Statue in Augsburg. It stands as a testament to Heinrich von Buz. He was a giant in the world of engineering. This statue erected in 1940 commemorates a remarkable man. A man who transformed Augsburg and indeed Germany.

Heinrich von Buz a visionary engineer. He studied at the Polytechnic School in Augsburg. He then honed his skills at the Polytechnicum in Karlsruhe. His education took him further afield to France and England. He gained valuable experience in different cultures and technologies.

In 1857 he joined the Maschinenfabrik Augsburg Aktiengesellschaft. By 1864 he solely led this company. Under his guidance the company soared to prominence. It became a leader in European mechanical engineering. His innovative spirit pushed boundaries.

In 1873 the factory achieved two milestones under his leadership. It created Germany’s first rotary printing press. It also built Germany’s first Linde refrigeration machine. These innovations were truly game-changing. They demonstrated Buz’s commitment to progress.

Further successes followed. In 1879 the company pioneered a horizontal double-crank compound steam engine. This was another ‘first’ in Germany. In 1888 the company once again set a new standard. They built a steam engine with three-stage steam expansion. This groundbreaking technology brought the company international acclaim. It was a testament to his engineering genius.

His belief in innovation led him to collaborate with Rudolf Diesel. This happened in 1893. Diesel presented his ideas for a more efficient heat engine. Buz believed in his vision. He poured significant resources and time into the project. Despite setbacks the first stationary oil engine was completed in 1897. This engine met Diesel’s efficiency standards. It marked a monumental shift in engine technology.

Buz’s ambition extended beyond the factory walls. His dedication improved the lives of his workers. He established exemplary welfare facilities. His impact extended to local transportation. He invested in the Augsburg local railway. He also beautified the city through the Augsburg city garden.

In 1898 Buz merged the Augsburg factory with the Maschinenfabrik Aktiengesellschaft Nuremberg. The combined entity became the Vereinigten Maschinenfabrik Augsburg und Maschinenbaugesellschaft Nuremberg Aktiengesellschaft. The name changed to Maschinenfabrik Augsburg-Nuremberg Aktiengesellschaft or MAN in 1909. He served as General Director in Augsburg until 1913. Anton Rieppel was his counterpart in Nuremberg.

Heinrich von Buz was more than just an industrialist. He was a pioneer and a visionary. He left an unforgettable legacy. This impressive Buz statue stands as a permanent reminder of his contributions. A tribute to a true giant of his time. He transformed the face of industry and Augsburg itself.
