Initially barren, Butcher Island transformed into a crucial part of Mumbai Port’s infrastructure. The island became a storage and distribution center for petroleum products. Crude oil and refined products pass through here. Mumbai Port Trust operates the oil terminals and storage on Butcher Island. These facilities are essential for Mumbai and nearby areas. They handle the import storage and transport of petroleum.
Consider the scale. Butcher Island features jetties berths and storage tanks. These are designed for large volumes of crude oil. Tankers efficiently load and unload here. This ensures a steady flow of essential commodities. The location of Butcher Island is strategic. It protects Mumbai from accidents related to handling crude oil. However, Butcher Island has faced environmental concerns. Oil spills and leakages from storage tanks have caused pollution. These incidents degrade the marine environment in Mumbai Harbour. Due to the presence of petroleum products tourism is not allowed on Butcher Island. So while you cannot visit Butcher Island you benefit from its existence.
