Ever wondered where Mumbai keeps its fuel safe? That’s Butcher Island. Officially known as Jawahar Dweep this island plays a vital role in Mumbai’s energy supply. Let me tell you its story.

Butcher Island is more than just a piece of land. It is located about 8.25 kilometers from the Gateway of India. This island is an artificial creation dating back to the late 19th century. Land reclamation in the Mumbai Harbour shaped it. The name “Butcher Island” may come from a British engineer who helped build it.

Initially barren, Butcher Island transformed into a crucial part of Mumbai Port’s infrastructure. The island became a storage and distribution center for petroleum products. Crude oil and refined products pass through here. Mumbai Port Trust operates the oil terminals and storage on Butcher Island. These facilities are essential for Mumbai and nearby areas. They handle the import storage and transport of petroleum.

Consider the scale. Butcher Island features jetties berths and storage tanks. These are designed for large volumes of crude oil. Tankers efficiently load and unload here. This ensures a steady flow of essential commodities. The location of Butcher Island is strategic. It protects Mumbai from accidents related to handling crude oil. Explosions fires and pollution are less likely to directly affect the city.

However, Butcher Island has faced environmental concerns. Oil spills and leakages from storage tanks have caused pollution. These incidents degrade the marine environment in Mumbai Harbour. Measures are underway to reduce these risks. These include improved safety pollution control and environmental monitoring.

In 2017 a fire broke out on Butcher Island. It took three days to extinguish the blaze. The fire occurred in a high-speed diesel tank. Multiple agencies worked together to contain the fire. A lightning strike was the likely cause. Operations on the island only resumed after a thorough inspection.

BPCL has eight tanks on Butcher Island. The fire was limited to only one tank. No casualties were reported during the incident. The incident did not cause a shortage of high-speed diesel in the market.

Despite being a restricted area much of Butcher Island has dense vegetation. A hillock rises from the center of the island. Due to the presence of petroleum products tourism is not allowed on Butcher Island. So while you cannot visit Butcher Island you benefit from its existence. It keeps the city safe and fuels its economy.
