Alexandru Obregia was a significant figure. He was born in 1860 and died in 1937. He was a psychiatrist and university professor. He headed the Department of Psychiatry. He also ran the Clinic of Mental Diseases. This was at the Faculty of Medicine in Bucharest. He held this position from 1910 to 1924.

Obregia’s career greatly influenced Romanian psychiatry. He studied the nervous system and schizophrenia. He also researched general paralysis. He introduced the suboccipital puncture to neurological practice.

In 1888 Obregia earned his medical doctorate. He specialized in psychiatry and neurology in Berlin and Paris. From 1893 he worked as a primary psychiatrist. He worked at the Mărcuţa Hospice. By 1905 he became the director. In 1908 he introduced the suboccipital puncture. In 1909 he became a professor of psychiatry. In 1922 he was elected President of the Romanian Society of Psychiatry.

In 1923 Obregia established the Clinic of Psychiatry. It was part of the new Central Hospital for nervous and mental illnesses. Today the hospital bears his name. It is located on Şoseaua Berceni number 10. The hospital was the largest in Romania. Obregia designed it between 1907 and 1910. Gh. Gr. Cantacuzino supported the project. The start was delayed because of funding issues and World War I. Obregia served as the director of the Central Hospital from 1927 to 1930. He retired in 1934. His student Professor Petre Tomescu succeeded him.
