Picture the remnants of a once-thriving watermill. That’s the Buschmühle. This isn’t just any old mill. It stands as a silent testament to Frankfurt Oder’s rich history.

The Buschmühle was more than just a mill grinding grain. Situated near the strongest spring in the Lossow Hills it was originally part of the Lossow estate until 1840. Imagine the constant churn of water powering its wheels. The mill pond was fed directly from nearby springs. The water flowed freely creating a perfect setting for the mill. Then came the railway. The mid-19th century construction of the Frankfurt Oder Guben railway line changed everything. Extensive embankment works severely disrupted the water supply. This caused the mill to cease operation.

The Buschmühle didn’t vanish completely. Instead it transformed into a Tabagie. This was a unique establishment a type of inn where smoking was allowed. It became a popular excursion destination for locals. Families flocked here for picnics and outings. The Buschmühle was a hub for community gatherings. It became a focal point of life in the area.

Sadly the Buschmühle’s story took a dark turn during the Second World War. A bridgehead was established here. Heavy fighting ensued. The Buschmühle was destroyed. Only ruins remain today a poignant reminder of the war’s destructive force. The area around the mill’s spring however is now a nature reserve. It’s a testament to nature’s resilience and its ability to reclaim what was lost. A hiking and biking trail starts right here leading into the beautiful Buschmühle nature reserve itself situated within the larger protected landscape of the Güldendorfer Mühlenthal also known locally as the Oderwiesen. This once bustling mill now a symbol of both industry and conflict stands as a reminder of Frankfurt Oder’s complex past.
