A once forgotten corner of Kigali Busanza has risen. From a place associated with a cemetery and a serial killer its story is one of remarkable transformation. Initially viewed as a far-off unattractive village Busanza was overlooked for years. People only visited to bury their loved ones. The more astute however saw potential. They bought land patiently waiting for its value to increase.

Even as Kigali expanded rapidly Busanza remained underdeveloped. This changed. The construction of a road linking Kanombe and Kabeza was pivotal. This connected Busanza to the wider city. Suddenly it became accessible.

Then came the relocation of families from Kangondo and Kibiraro. Initially met with resistance many were skeptical about living in Busanza. They saw it as an isolated and underdeveloped area. However the government’s persistence paid off. It built a model village. This attracted new residents. The model village served as a cornerstone for Busanza’s growth.

The area has experienced a meteoric rise. New houses sprang up. Electricity and streetlights illuminated the streets. A modern market was built. People started to see the value in Busanza. They bought land and started building. More than 800 families from Nyarutarama also relocated to Busanza. The influx of new residents breathed new life into the area.

Today Busanza is a vibrant middle-class suburb. The perception of witchcraft and crime has faded. Affordable rent and basic necessities attract people. It is now home to a diverse mix of nationalities. Students from various African countries live there. They coexist peacefully with Rwandans. Busanza also boasts schools sports facilities and a health centre. The area is now safer. Security is no longer a major concern.

The transformation of Busanza is a testament to the government’s investment. The improved infrastructure created a more organized and liveable environment. It also shows the potential of even the most overlooked areas. Busanza’s story is a reminder that growth is possible even where it is least expected. The old cemetery remains. But now it is surrounded by a thriving community. A community that is a reflection of Kigali’s remarkable resilience and vision. A community that once was overlooked now flourishes.
