Did you know that Bury’s name comes from an Old English word meaning stronghold? This market town on the River Irwell boasts a rich history. It has evolved from ancient roots to a key player in the Industrial Revolution. We are standing in the heart of Bury.

Let’s delve into Bury’s story. Evidence suggests Roman activity here. A Roman urn filled with bronze coins dating back to AD 253-282 was found. Imagine Roman soldiers marching through what is now Bury. They were connecting the forts of Manchester and Ribchester.

Bury Castle was once the town’s most imposing structure. Built in 1469 for Sir Thomas Pilkington, it stood high above the Irwell Valley. The Pilkington family, however, faced misfortune during the Wars of the Roses. They supported the House of York. After Richard III’s defeat in 1485, Thomas Pilkington was executed. His estate was then given to Thomas Stanley, the Earl of Derby.

The Stanley family maintains a connection with Bury. The Derby High School bears their name. The school’s badge even features the Earl’s coat of arms. The castle’s remains lay hidden until excavations in the 1970s.

Bury transformed rapidly during the Industrial Revolution. In 1773, Sir Robert Peel’s family established Brooksbottom Mill in Summerseat. This marked the beginning of Bury’s cotton industry. The Rivers Roch and Irwell powered spinning mills. They also provided water for finishing trades. The Manchester, Bolton and Bury Canal further boosted development. It fully opened in 1808.

By 1818, Bury had seven cotton mills. The town’s population boomed. It grew from 9152 in 1801 to 58029 in 1901. Railways soon followed, connecting Bury to Manchester and other mill towns. Industries like paper-making and calico printing thrived.

Writer Geoffrey Moorhouse stated that Bury’s history is intertwined with the Lancashire Fusiliers. The Lancashire Fusiliers played a role in military history.

Bury Market is world-famous. It has operated for nearly 600 years. Its original license dates back to 1444. In 2006, it was voted Britain’s best market. People travel from far and wide to visit. Black pudding stalls are a major attraction.

Bury is known for its black pudding. The Bury Black Pudding Company supplies retailers like Harrods. It also supplies major supermarkets. Bury simnel cake is another local culinary specialty.

Today, Bury is an important commuter town for Manchester. The Metrolink provides a light rapid transit system. The M66 motorway connects the town to the wider motorway network.

Bury’s coat of arms symbolizes its industrial past. It features an anvil, a golden fleece, shuttles, and a papyrus plant. The Latin motto Vincit Omnia Industria means work conquers all.

Bury Art Museum houses the Wrigley collection. It includes works by Turner, Constable, and Landseer. Architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner described the building as probably the best in Bury.

From its Roman origins to its industrial boom and modern commuter status, Bury has a captivating story. Its landmarks, market, and cultural attractions make it a town of enduring interest.
