Why is Burong Pingai Ayer called “Burong Pingai”? Well, legend has it that the name originated from a fascinating event. It involves a pembalat, a person who skillfully uses bamboo baskets to capture fish or crafts fish traps from bamboo. This pembalat, from Kampong Saba, stumbled upon a captivating sight in the village – a white bird emitting a distinctive “pingai, pingai, pingai” sound. His memory was jogged. He remembered that Sin Pingai, a white bird cherished by Sultan Muhammad Shah’s wife, had recently passed away. Could this be the same bird? He carefully captured the bird and presented it to the sultan. It was indeed Sin Pingai! From that day forward, the village became known as Kampong Burong Pingai, a name that echoes the tale of the rediscovered bird. Interestingly, the village wasn’t always called Burong Pingai Ayer. The name was appended with “Ayer” in the 1960s. This was done to distinguish it from its counterpart on land, Kampong Burong Pingai Berakas.
