“Moderate” does not even begin to describe the adventure that awaits us at Burnt Mountain. This high point in Daley Ranch offers more than just a hike. Let’s explore Burnt Mountain together.
Burnt Mountain stands tall within the 3058-acre Daley Ranch. This park is maintained by the City of Escondido. Reaching the summit of Burnt Mountain involves a journey of about 8.7 miles round trip. The elevation gain is around 1400 feet. That’s like climbing 1.12 Empire State Buildings.
The path to Burnt Mountain starts at the La Honda Drive parking area. A shorter route exists from Cougar Pass Road. Daley Ranch welcomes visitors from dawn till dusk. Parking is free which is always a bonus.
Starting on the paved Ranch House Road offers an immediate reward. Stanley Peak comes into view. On this tour, we will save Stanley for another day. We will branch left onto the dirt Boulder Loop trail, taking the longer leg. Hikers and equestrians often share this trail.
The terrain around Burnt Mountain is classic San Diego County. Boulder-strewn rolling hills define the landscape. The route involves a series of small ups and downs. This makes for a varied and engaging hike.
As we approach Burnt Mountain, a faint trail appears. The trail ends abruptly. This requires a bit of searching for the right path.
A well-established use trail appears past an open area with tall grass. We will be sure not to trample any vegetation. A couple of tricky turns around boulders await. Light scrambling becomes necessary in a few spots.
The summit of Burnt Mountain features interesting boulders. Three marks indicate the high point. A benchmark and two reference marks form a small circle. The register sits in a cluster of boulders. It is about 10 feet higher than the benchmark. The register contains scraps of paper.
The views from Burnt Mountain are expansive. On a clear day, the scenery is simply breathtaking. After enjoying the summit, we will jog the downhills. A brisk pace makes the return journey quick.
Please note that the peak itself is considered off limits. Stanley Peak appears to be directly on the trail as an alternative. This peak makes for a worthy alternative.
